About Garoto
The company was opened in 1929 by German immigrant Heinrich Meyerfreund under the name H. Meyerfreund & Cia. in a shed in Prainha, EspĆrito Santo. The first sweets were sold in trays by boys at a streetcar stop. They were then called Balas do Garoto. Distribution then began to commercial residences in the state capitals and cities. In 1934, the entrepreneur inherited his parents' legacy and bought a machine to produce chocolate. He then built a more modern factory near GlĆ³ria, where the company's industrial complex still stands today.
With a new infrastructure, the company entered a phase of great development, reaching points of sale beyond the state. In 1938, GĆ¼nther Zennig joined the company and boosted the business. He not only capitalized the company, allowing for new investments in modernizing the production and commercial structures, but also brought a new entrepreneurial vision to the brand. The initial growth cycle was only interrupted by the Second World War. Because he was of German origin, the businessman was imprisoned in Maruipe prison and the factory came under the management of federal interventionists.
In 1962, the entrepreneur suffered the great loss of Zennig. That same year, it became a privately-held company. During the 1970s and 1980s, the brand expanded and modernized its industrial park and production processes, adopted new business policies and established a presence in the domestic market. These moves supported the company's growth in the 1990s, a period in which it continued to invest in technology, launch new products and solidify the brand's business structure. In 1989, a modern distribution center was opened in SĆ£o Paulo, also serving the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais.
