 About Condor

The history of this supermarket began on March 13, 1974, when young entrepreneur Pedro Joanir Zonta bought a small 110-square-meter market in the Pinheirinho district of Curitiba and started his business with five active employees. The following year, in January 1975, he bought the land next to his market and built a three-storey building divided into a basement where the warehouse was located; the second floor, where the store was located; and on the second floor his apartments, offices and another light store.

At first, the entrepreneur thought that the space problem would be solved by expanding, but as turnover and the number of customers increased, the store became smaller and smaller. In 1977, he bought a plot of land nearby and opened a new store with 1,200 square meters of sales space, 12 cashiers and 60 employees. Today, the site houses the Condor Administrative Center (Head Office) and the Hiper Condor Pinheirinho store. The challenges have only grown over the years. The threat of a powerful competitor closing in on their business was a problem. And in 1998, with the sale of Paraná's main supermarket chain to a foreign group, Zonta saw an opportunity to consolidate itself in the market.

Faced with the new reality, he has two options: succumb to the harassment of foreign chains, sell the company or use it to win over dissatisfied consumers with a new form of business. The choice was to modernize the store, computerize the company and adopt innovative management and marketing practices, thus winning over the "orphans" who were no longer the Parana chain.

The company's planned expansion with its own resources and those of the BNDES, as well as the continuous training of its employees, are fundamental to this. A new store model, the hypermarket, emerged in 2000. The first was launched in Londrina, then in São José dos Pinhais and Ponta Grossa, whose stores were transformed into new formats and launched in Curitiba, where the first Condor supermarket was inaugurated in 2002, in Nilo Peçanha.
